Our Circle Art from the West Coast Collection is an exploration into materials and techniques to push the boundary of conventional weaving.
Inspired by salmon migration in West Coast Canada and the flowing rivers, circular rings were chosen to suggest movement, a departure from the usual rigid loom we work on. Using the circular shape as a starting point, a warp was set up in different ways to create the foundation of the piece. Each warp adds a different dimension to the finished outcome, adding movement or structure where necessary.
Materiality plays a large part in our design process as many of the designs feature a colourful combination of hand-dyed and hand-spun 'waste' yarns from my studio. This process of giving new life to offcuts of wool roving fibres helps us to reduce waste, but also create a new dimension for work that has a truly bespoke look. When introduced into the woven design the blend of colours and textures elevates the artwork with a sense of movement.
Materials that were introduced used a combination of techniques, from traditional plain weave to soumak. But the focus was less on pattern but on the material, to allow the colours and textures to take centre stage.
